Where ASTM D882 Fits - and Where Type 1 Comes From
This data applies to non-adhesive PE or LDPE warning film and finished detectable laminates used above buried utilities. ASTM D882 covers tensile properties of thin plastic film; any Type 1 designation must come from the governing project or warning-device specification.
Use underground utility marker tape structures separately when choosing detectable, non-detectable, tracer-wire, or mesh formats. This document does not repeat color selection, roll sizes, burial-depth guidance, or product-range comparisons.
Define the Tested Article Before Comparing Results
A visual grade is typically PE or LDPE film with a printed legend; a detectable grade can add a metallic layer. Record whether the specimen is base film or the complete laminate.
For a PE/metallic laminate, compare results with the specified detectable metallic underground tape construction. An integrated conductor is a different test article; the tracer wire tape construction should not inherit a foil-laminate result without confirming the specimen. Measure thickness on the same construction that is tested.

Compare MD, TD, Thickness and Break Behavior Together
MPa expresses stress; N/25 mm expresses force over a defined width. Compare them only when specimen geometry and thickness are known, and keep maximum tensile, tensile-at-break, and break-force results distinct.
Report machine direction (MD) and transverse direction (TD) separately. Distinguish a normal break from grip failure, edge tear, film tearing, or laminate separation because abnormal failure changes interpretation.
Mechanical Strength Does Not Prove Detectability
ASTM D882 tensile strength and elongation describe mechanical behavior, not detectability. Detectable grades also depend on metallic continuity, connection condition, burial environment, and locating equipment.
For non-metallic pipe routes, pair the mechanical record with the continuity and field checks used for detection tape for plastic pipe. Keep soil condition, burial depth, and equipment settings outside the ASTM D882 value itself.

Build a Representative Sample Record
Use production-representative specimens and record roll or batch identity. Confirm thickness and MD/TD orientation, then document conditioning, equipment settings, result type, and failure location.
Retest after material changes in construction, thickness, conditioning, or storage history. For detectable laminates, also inspect print legibility, layer integrity, unwind, and metallic continuity. Compare the sample with the project requirement, not an unrelated grade.

Preserve the Roll Condition Before Retesting
Store rolls dry, protected from direct heat and prolonged sunlight, with packaging intact. Temperature, humidity, storage time, packaging damage, roll pressure, stacking, and transport conditions can change film condition or roll geometry.
If storage has changed the roll condition, recondition representative specimens and repeat affected checks.
